1880
December 13th: William HERBERT (44)
Newgate
An Australian immigrant who had left his poverty stricken family back home to make a vain attempt to claim on an inheritance, worth sixteen thousand pounds per annum. During the summer he persuaded his sister-in-law, Jane Messenger, to leave her husband and set up home with him. On 22 October they were together in Finsbury Park when a witness saw him draw a pistol and fire two shots at her before turning the gun on himself. He claimed he had become disheartened at his financial state and decided they should both die together.
